How to Remove Beer Stains From a Pool Table Felt

I chose beer stains because its the most common stain usually associated with playing billiards or pool.

It's important to remember that a felt top to a pool table is not like other fabrics and, as such, has to be handled with care.

Here's what you're going to need:

- a bowl or a dish for mixing your concoction
- white vinager (believe it or not, I have to make this distinction)
- cool water ( I repeat cool water)
- clean cloths (best to use a lint-free micro-fibre cloth)

And here's what you need to do;

1. Of course, it the spill just happened, blot up as much of the spill using your cloth as possible. Blot, do not wipe or scrub as you could cause damage to the felt or spread the spill causing an even larger stain.

2. After thoroughly rinsing out your cloth with cool water, repeat step 1, this time using cool water.

3.Next, in your bowl, mix two caps of your white vinager to about a cup of water. Remember!!! Cool Water!

4.Dip your clean cloth in the mixture and continue to blot the stain, repeatedly rinsing out your cloth and re-moistening it with your solution.

5. When you have removed the offending spot, allow the felt to air dry. If there is any stain still present, repeat the above steps.

Remember, you want to use cool water as warm or hot water could set your stain. The sooner you can address the spill, the greater your chances of removing the stain.

Dustmites! What are they and what can be done about them?

I often think that homeowners would become more fanatical about cleanliness if they new just what was hiding in their furniture and carpets. One such character is Dermatophagoides farinae Hughes or the North American Dust Mite.

So, what is a dust mite exactly? Well, basically, they are tiny microscopic creatures that live off of dead skin and hair. You should also know that there are, potentially, millions of them in your home.. In fact, a couple of hundred thousand of them will typically be found in a square meter of carpet. Several million will take up residence in a mattress!

Since they live off of the dead skin and hair we shed each day of our lives, they tend to concentrate in areas where we tend to lounge or spend a significant amount of time. Mattresses, sofas, living room carpets tend to be favorite haunts for this beast. Interesting Fact!! : Humans shed up to 10 grams of skin each week!

Some of you are probably equating dust mites to bed bugs about now. They're not the same. Dust mites aren't known for carrying diseases or having a bite that is toxic in any way. However, the proteins that are found in their feces, their dead carcasses and the dead skin cells and hair they digest are a primary irritant to people with allergies or asthma.

The symptoms of such allergies are sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, congestion, difficulty breathing etc.

So, Dave, what can we do to get rid of these little pests?

Well, there are a number of things that I could suggest.
- Clean daily (or at least every few days)
-Wash bedding in very hot water
-Consider using a plastic matttress cover
-Use synthetic fabrics . Dust mites love wool!
-keep the humidity in your home lower.
-Replace your furnace filters monthly. If you have washable filters, clean monthly.

And, of course, have your carpets and upholstery steamcleaned regularily.

Why should you get your carpets cleaned??

Funny enough, those of us "in the industry" come across cases, quite regularly, where a home owner (or renter) will indicate that they never clean their carpets! Ewww! Right now, some of you are turning bright red because you also have never cleaned your carpet.

Rather remarkable given that we take for granted that we wash ourselves and our clothes on rather regular basis. Can you imagine, never washing your clothes? Might explain your pronounced lack of friends.

So, allow me to enlighten you as to some of the reasons why you should steam clean your carpets at least every 12 to 18 months. Not to mention, vacuum them at least weekly.

REASON 1

Health Reasons: Dirty carpets are a breeding ground for bacteria, germs, mold and mildew! Did you know that allergists actually favour carpeting in the house over hardwoood or tiles. This is because it serves to trap airborne dust and debris that would normally be carried up into the air we breath with every draft or gust of wind. Removing Midew Smell from Carpet

Whenever carpet becomes wet or damp, there is a risk of mildew or, even worse, mildew. Molds and mildew can be hazardous to your health if allowed to persist.

Heavy mildew or mold should be treated or removed by a professional. However, if your problem appears to be the mildewy smell associated with wet or damp carpet, follow this simple method to rectify the problem.

You'll need the following:

- vacuum and towels (don't use your best ones)
- a spray bottle
- a cup of water
- 1/4 cup of liquid laundry detergent
- a fungicide spray

1. Start by drying the carpet completely. Use a fan blowing over the damp area for faster drying.

2. Once dry, most of the mildew spores can be vacuumed up. Vacuum thoroughly.

3. Mix the water and detergent in a spray bottle. Ensure that the spray bottle is clean of anything that may have been in it before.

4. Spray the mixture on the target area of carpet. You just want to lightly cover the area with your solution. Avoid over-wetting the area. Allow about 10 minutes for the mixture to do its work then using a bunch of towels, dry the area.

5. Finally, mist the carpet with the fungicide. Be sure to follow the directions on the fungicide bottle noting that proper air ventalation is required. Home Depot and Rona carry a few fungicides that would do the trick.

C.NAIL POLISH REMOVER - Amyl acetate (banana fragrance). Follow with the detergent mix. Some dyestuffs are notcompletely "fast" to polish remover. It is important to test in an inconspicuous area. If these cleaning methods are not effective, consult a professional.
D.VINEGAR SOLUTION - Mix 1/3 cup white vinegar to 1/3 cup lukewarm water.
E.AMMONIA SOLUTION - Mix 1 tablespoon ammonia to 3/4 to 1 cup water.
F.WARM WATER - Use lukewarm tap water.

How to get dried latex paint out of carpet

Well, this has happened to all of us at one time or another no matter how careful you are. Seems that if paint and carpet are within 50 ft of each other they're gonna bond!

Follow these simple instructions and save yourself some grief.

Instructions

Paint scraper
Acrylic paint remover
Glycerin
White cloth
Mild hand dishwashing liquid
Sponge
Vinegar
Water
Towels

- 1
  Remove latex paint with a paint scraper. Gently move the paint scraper in an up-and-down motion to avoid damaging carpet fibers.
- 2
  Apply a small amount of acrylic paint remover to a white cloth. Apply the paint remover to the outer edge of the paint stain. Use a paint scraper to remove paint as it softens. Repeat this process until all traces of latex paint are gone.

  Apply glycerin to remove any remaining paint. Pour glycerin onto a white cloth. Massage the glycerin into the latex paint stain. Allow the glycerin to penetrate the stain for four hours or more.

  Apply a mild formula of liquid dishwashing detergent to a sponge. Pat the area with the sponge. Blot the area until most of the solution is absorbed.

  Mix one part vinegar to ten parts water. Dip a sponge into the mixture. Blot the area until the mixture is absorbed.

  Dip a sponge into cold water and blot the area. Use dry towels to soak up excess water. Blot the area repeatedly until the area is dry.

Removing Chocolate Stains from Carpet and Upholstery

Well, since it's Easter, no doubt, some of you are going to have problems with chocolate stains on your furniture and carpets. So, here are a couple of tips as to how to safely and quickly remove such blemishes from your world. Sorry, I can't help you with the several pounds you've added to your thighs as a result of this weekend's chocolate feast.

Carpet

Follow these steps to remove chocolate stains from Synthetic Carpet and Wool Carpet:

Blot up or scrape as much of the excess as possible.
To prevent setting stain, flush with club soda.
Try an application of Folex Carpet Stain Remover or a concentrated solution of a non-alkali carpet cleaner..

After drying and vacuuming, if stain remains:

Mix 1 tablespoon ammonia to 1 cup cool water and carefully drop small amounts onto the stain. (On wool carpets, test in an inconspicuous corner first, as ammonia can harm wool.)
Blot with an absorbent pad.
Flush or sponge carpeting with cool, clear water. It is important to remove all traces of ammonia.
Place a clean absorbent pad or towel over the area and weigh it down or simple stand on the towel..
When no more liquid is being absorbed, allow it to thoroughly air dry.

Upholstery

Chocolate and candy on big-ticket items like furniture and upholstery are best removed with a dash of rubbing alcohol or dry cleaning fluid blotted on using a white paper towel, clean rag or cloth diaper.
Simply wet the stain with a small amount of either, then immediately blot dry. Check for remaining brown smudges. If any residue remains, repeat this step until the smudge disappears.

Tips on Removing Pet Stains on Carpet

This is, by far, the most common stain issue we deal with here at SmithWerks Carpet Cleaning in North Vancouver. If you have a pet, you most probably understand the frustration that comes with house or litterbox training. Proper cleaning and stain removal is not only desirable for a fresh and clean house, it's also essential in training of your pet. as well.

Follow these simple steps and help to eliminate some of that frustration. Remember! The quicker you address the spot, the more likely that you'll be successful with your efforts. I'm going to focus our discussion today on dog or cat urine. I'll address pet vomit and feces in another blog post.

1. Soak up as much of the spot using a dry thick towel or cloth. I recommend having a collection of old towels on hand, the thicker the better. Second hand towels from a thrift store for instance. Blot up as much of the stain as possible. If the towel is thick enough, place it on the stain and stand on it to force the urine transfer to the towel. The stain should be barely damp at the end of this first step.

2. Now, rinse the spot with cool, clean water. Warm or hot water could set the stain. You may want to add a couple of caps of white vinager to your rinse water. This will help to deodorize and disinfect the effected carpet. Repeat the first step. Blot up as much of the moisture as possible. Again, at the end of this step, the spot should be slightly damp.

3. This last step involves the use of a store bought spotter. I recommend Folex. It's fairly neutral in terms of its PH and is safe to use. I recommend spraying a few squirts on to a clean white rag and blotting the remaining spot, checking the rag for color or stain from the urine.

This should take care of any fresh urine spots before they become "one with the carpet".

How to Select the Right Carpet Style for your Home

I am asked all the time what carpet type is best for my home. Well, the answer to this depends on many factors and, quite often, depends on the type of traffic and household setting in question. Quite often, we walk into a carpeting outlet and, simply, look at the aesthetics of the samples that are on display with little regard for whether or not the type of carpet is suitable for the proposed space. So, I thought I'd give you a brief overview of the differing types of carpet styles and interject a bit of my own opinion as to how they stand up to such things as wear and cleanability.

Plush

This style usually comes in a solid color with a cut pile to give the appearance of a perfectly flat surface. This is a very popular choice with builders and is quite often labelled as a "builders grade". The plus is that it comes in a huge variety of colors and shades. In most cases it is made of nylon and will have a fairly good resistance to staining if maintained and the spills are addressed immediately. The downside to this carpet choice is that it doesn't wear well. Typically it has a life of about 5 to 7 years. The traffic shading, especially on lighter coloured versions, start to become permanent within only a year or two. Footprints are annoyingly visable on this type of pile.

Textured Plush

This style has more than one colour mix and has varying heights to the pile. Again, nylon is the predominant fibre here, so spot cleaning is easier. The varied pile height also hides vacuum lines and footprints too. With proper care, this carpet choice has a 10 to 12 year lifespan.

Saxony

This is a very dense carpet. Has a very course or "meaty" look to it. The tips of the carpet fibres are very distinguishable. Like a plush carpet, it shows wear relatively quickly and will also make foot prints and vacuum marks apparent.

Sculptured

Very popular in the 70's and 80's and starting to make a comeback now, this type of carpet has two types of tufts. It usually mixes a berber (looped) construction with a twisted fibre. A very luxurious appearance mixing shades and colours. The downside, though, is that if you are not up to regular vacuuming, the higher, points of this construction will show wear within a few years. As the higher, twisted fibres shade from wear, the contrast with the lower looped fibres tend to accent the traffic patterns quicker. There is also a risk of snagging with the berber loops of this pile. So watch out for this when pets are present.

Frieze

When asked which is my favorite style>this is it!

It has a very tight twist to the fibres which help with reducing the effects of wear. Lasts a long time. Average life of this style of carpet is 10 to 15 years or more if maintained well. It comes in a variety of colours and shades. Looks great, feels great, and easily maintained.

Berber

This is the carpet style that is my least favorite and the one that my customers tend to always regret choosing.

Yes, it looks elegant in the store, which made it popular with decorators. However, it is plagued with issues. The tufts are looped. The larger the loop the quicker the appearance of wear. Wear is caused by friction, not only from foot traffic, but also from the particulate (dirt) that comes off our feet that gets trapped under those pesky loops. The particles of dirt actually cut into the fibres and magnify the wear. Hence, it is one of the highest maintenance carpet styles around.

Other issues include seam exposure, where the tufts fall to opposite sides of a seam making it very visable in a short period of time. Snags are very common, especially where pets and children are present. Also be careful moving furniture as this could result in snags. One of my earlier posts addresses snag repairs.

The life of most berbers is about 5 to 8 years depending on how well cared for it is.

Wool or Synthetic??

This is my own opinion.....

I will always tend to favour synthetic fibres as they are more easily maintained than wool. Most retailers don't advise their customers as to how to properly treat stains or traffic wear when it comes to carpet, especially wool ones. You are restricted greatly, as to what you can use on wool carpets to lift spots. Wool fibres tend to require more acidic treatments as opposed to the alkyline natured spot removers that one finds in most stores. The use of "soaps" to remove spots on a wool carpet can burn or mark permanently. Water staining (brown or reddish in appearance) are also quite common on wool carpets. The use of peroxide or oxygen bleach products is not recommended.

Removing Ink from Furniture Fabric

This has to be one of the most common stains I encounter when cleaning upholstery. Follow these simple steps and you'll most likely be successful in removing most if not all the ink mark.

Like any stain, ink or otherwise, the quicker you address it, the more likely that you are going to be successful in removing the mark.

Start with cool water and gently blot the mark. I suggest using a clean, white cloth. That way, you'll be able to see if there is any transfer of the ink to the cloth. Try to avoid rubbing the spot. Vigorous agitation can damage the fibre or even tear it. Remember!....use cool water! Heat could cause the stain to set making it almost impossible to remove.

When you are satisfied that you have removed as much of the ink mark as possible, you can proceed to the next step.

Surprisingly, hairspray is quite effective in removing ink. For light ink stains, spray a light application of hairspray on to a clean white rag and gently blot until the ink mark is gone. For heavier ink marks, spray the ink mark directly, saturating the spot and then gently agitate using a toothbrush. (Uhh, don't use the toothbrush for cleaning your teeth after this) Remember, don't agitate to hard as you could damage the fibre. Finish, by blotting again with cool water.

What to do about those unsightly black lines along your baseboards.....

Filtration lines are a common problem in homes today. They are also very difficult to remove. In this article you will learn what they are, how to treat them and how to prevent them.

First lets talk about what filtration lines are. Filtration lines are dark lines that appear around walls and underneath doors. They form when you HVAC system is blowing air into the room. To equalize the pressure caused by the system air rushes underneath walls and under doors. The carpet in this area acts as a filter trapping fine particles of dust and soot. This manifests itself as a dark line.

Cleaning these lines is not that easy. They will often improve but will probably not be completely eliminated. To treat them you will need some white terry cloth rags, a bottle of citrus spotter, a bottle of general spotter and a spray bottle of a vinegar solution(1/3 white distilled vinegar to 2/3 water). First vacuum the area thoroughly. Now spray the spotter on your rag and gently blot the filtration lines. Keep going until no more soil transfers to your cloth. The citrus spotter will remove any greasy soil. Now get your general spotter and spray it on a cloth. Once again gently blot the filtration line until no more soil transfers to the rag. The general spotter should remove any remaining soil. Lastly you will want to spray the area you just cleaned with your vinegar mix. Spray the area., let the solution dwell for a few seconds and then blot it up. This will help remove any residue left by the other spotters.

That's it. You are done. Hopefully most of the stain has been removed but this is not usually the case. The best way to treat these stains is to prevent them. Change your homes air filter often and try to leave doors open so that air has a place to go. Remember an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Blood Stains on Carpet : Cleaning and Removal

For some strange reason, I have been getting a lot of calls regarding blood stains on carpet. Specifically, what can a home owner do to remove them. Well, all is not lost as long as you follow a few very simple steps. Like any stains, the quicker you are able to treat them, the more likely you are going to be successful in removing them.

So lets get started

Remove as much of the stain as possible by blotting with a white paper towel, then neutralize with an ammonia solution (1 tablespoon of clear household ammonia to 1/2 cup of water.). Saturate spot with the ammonia solution using a spray bottle. Do not wet backing. Blot with a white paper towel to remove excess moisture. All solutions for removing blood must be cool.
Apply a small quantity of detergent solution to the spot. (To make the detergent solution mix 1/4 teaspoon of a hand dish washing detergent which does not contain lanolin or bleach with 1 quart of water; examples of safe detergents are Dawn® and Joy®.) Use a blotting motion to work the detergent into the affected area. If spot is being removed continue applying detergent and blotting with a white paper towel until spot is removed.
Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle, blot to remove excess moisture.
Spray lightly with water, do not blot this time; apply pad of paper towels and brick and allow to dry.
If there is still some stain on the carpet and blotting is not removing it, then moisten the tufts in the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Let stand for on (1) hour. Blot and repeat until carpet is stain free. Light will cause peroxide to change back to water so no rinsing is necessary. Apply pad of paper towels and weight down with brick.

Remember, when it comes to blood, cool water is the rule. Hot water can set the stain.
